As we have 28 cards in our WILD VOICES set, we have decided to dedicate each of the 28 days of our campaign to one of these cards.
As you travel through Africa your heartland, the wild voices of our African Animals become your guides ….
Zebra comes trotting briskly into your reading today. Take heed, this no-nonsense matriarch keeps strict social order.
In Zebra clan, the females form a strong matriarchal arrangement within the protective boundaries of the males. The females have a strict hierarchy; rank and order is held in place by the matriarch,
ZEBRA
Key word: BOUNDARIES
Element: EARTH (Symbolised by the DJIMBÉ DRUM)
Expressing the FEMALE quality of SELF DISCIPLINE
[excerpts from ZEBRA’S message in the book Wild Voices: Messages from the Soul of Africa by Anne Keating]
We all live within certain boundaries. As humans we construct these boundaries to assist with the conceptualisation of our world. They form the framework within which we manage our lives. We are able to maintain order, consistency and harmony. We feel protected and secure.
Realistic boundaries are essential to our well-being but the sad paradox is that once in place we have a habit of setting them in concrete.
The best boundary is like that of the womb – it holds the growing life firmly in place but stretches to accommodate its growth.
Look at where you might be stuck within some old, worn-out belief system. Are you adhering to old dogma or a traditional mindset? Is it still serving you? What emphasis do you place on outside authority? Who or what do you rely on to set the rules for you?
Could you start trusting yourself enough, your own inner knowing, even your intuition to set your own pace, to give yourself your own structure?
However safe and comfortable you might feel in the structure and routine, in the habits and customary practices you have built up around yourself, they can quickly become a box - dark and boring with no room for growth. Remember the womb that once allowed you to grow. Zebra comes today to encourage you to push your old boundaries a little, dare to step out and live a little differently.
On the other hand, you might have drawn Zebra energy because you need to set some kind of boundary around yourself. Are you “all over the place”? Zebra is inviting you to set personal parameters and to stick to them.
This will also include learning to say NO? Beware of people who invade your space, make demands, drain your energy, and leave you dry and weary – say NO!

Defender/Warrior energy is strong in Zebra; although theirs is a matriarchal society the males in the herd form a laager type ring around the females to protect them. This is reflected in our human society but we need to put emphasis on supporting our young men to find ways to use their potent warrior energy to become true warriors. Earth warriors who protect and nurture, who create and build up a new world, who generate new ideas, who invent and initiate new behaviours, and who lead us with the gentleness of true strength.
Inspired by ZEBRA I understand that …
I can change my boundaries when I have to; they are there to serve me in a creative way, not restrict me.
Sometimes there is no grey area; there is only black or white and yes or no.
