As we have 28 cards in our WILD VOICES set, we have decided to dedicate each of the 28 days of our campaign to one of these cards.
As you travel through Africa, your heartland, the wild voices of the African Animals become your guides …
THE ELEMENTS
In the Wild Voices pack, as with other card sets of this nature, we use the 4 elements of
EARTH AIR FIRE WATER
The element gives a certain vibration or feel to the card which adds to the message you will receive. Each Animal falls under one of these elements.
AIR
Today we are touching in with what is rational, clear, uncomplicated and to the point.
The Assagai, like the sword, spear and the arrow (all Male symbols) cut through and penetrate to the heart of the matter.
In the WILD VOICES pack the ASSAGAI is the symbol used for the AIR element.
Key words: SERVICE with the CYCLES OF LIFE, the ANCESTORS and the act of RELEASE
Expressing the introverted MALE through the quality of CONGRUENCY
(Introvert – a withdrawing, a certain passivity)
[Excerpts from the AIR card in the book Wild Voices: Messages from the Soul of Africa by Anne Keating]
The Assagai and Arrow have been used by African men, both in war and for hunting since they first learnt to craft tools. It is through the element of Air that they take flight, as direct and unwavering as from the hand that releases them.
Air is rational, clear, uncomplicated and to the point.
It exposes falsehood and pretense, and breaks through old, stuffy ideas
Air is also associated with the unseen; thought-forms, vibrations, spirit.
In the Xhosa tribe in southern Africa, Wind and Spirit share the same name – Omoya.
Honour your ancestors, the unseen Spirits; it is on the Air, in the form of smoke, that the passion of Fire rises to meet the gods.
This card brings your spiritual life into focus. How congruent are your feelings with your outer actions and with regard to the way you worship?
In many spiritual cultures Birds are seen as spiritual messengers – an AIR card might be calling your attention to observe – to use the keen eyesight of Bird to pin point the message.
Our planet’s forests and jungles are a powerful symbol for Air. The leaves have one common function, to serve; to give to this whole sentient, pulsating planet its most basic need - AIR. Ask yourself today where best you may serve.
Leaves provide us with shade and cool, a place to hide, a place to nest, nourishment for bodies and the soil. They are a witness to the wind when they shake and quiver at his touch. They are his mouthpiece; they allow him to sing, and through the pine needles we hear him whisper, in the willows we hear him sigh. Lulled by his voice, we are calmed into meditation which is only the clearing of thoughts (Air), the stilling of the busy mind.
When young and green, the leaves on any one plant look alike, but examine them in their old age when fallen, golden, rust or magenta, each has its own unique markings. A blotch here, a red streak there, bent, curled in different directions. Life has put her mark on each; each leaf bearing witness to its own private joys and sorrows. Learn that although we are one of many millions, by the time we have to let go and litter the forest floor, each of us is distinctive; a unique witness to our own life.
Perhaps the most difficult lesson we have to learn from leaf is that of letting go – it is only the autumn leaves that are collected and pressed, never the green ones, so let go with joy and dignity, you will be remembered!

How is the unseen element of AIR celebrated in Africa?
AIR is …
the first breath of Cheetah cub as his mother licks the fine membrane from his face
the call of Fish Eagle as he sweeps over Kosi Bay
the patterns in the sand in the Namib Desert
the Equatorial Rain Forests – Gaia’s lungs
the intricacies of Bee’s social structure
the cry of Bush Baby into the night
the freedom of the wind at the summit of the Atlas mountains
the delicate twitch of Blesbok’s nose as he catches the scent
the keen intelligence of Bird as he designs his nest
and the refined and mystical exchange within the nervous systems of all creatures.
Comment from Mama ka Grace: I wanted the viewer to unthinkingly take a deep breath of air when they looked at this card.
